Welcome to Borno State - "Home of Peace"

The fifth Executive Governor of Borno State Sen. (Dr.) Ali Modu Sheriff, was born in Ngala Town, Ngala Local Government Area in 1956 to the amiable and respected business tycoon Galadima Modu Sheriff and Hajiya Aisa Modu.

He was raised up by his grand father in Ngala Town and began his primary education in Ngala Primary School in 1968 and completed it in 1974. He proceeded to the Government Secondary School Bama, between 1974-1979 and came out with General Certificate of Education.

Dr. Ali Modu Sheriff attended the Borno College of Basic Studies (BOCOBS) where he did his remedial program.

The Governor later proceeded to the London School of Business Studies where he majored in Insurance, Banking and Finance.

In 1981, he was offered employment with his father's construction company as a Director and rose to become the Managing Director of the Company.

History of Borno State
"The Home of Peace" - This acronym well fits Borno State as the State is known for its peaceful and hospitable nature despite its diverse differences in terms of history, religion, culture and languages amongst others. A brief on the State is all that is required to make a visitor to Borno State feel at home.

People have been living in the Chad basin area even before the empires of Kanem and Borno were founded. The basin which stretches from the Tibesti Mountain in the north, the Mandara Mountains in the South, from the ancient town of Air in the West to the Ennedi in the east has an area of open water which had once covered its wider parts. Although the shorelines still varies, it has been relatively confined to its present size for over 4,000 years.

Achievements

Some of the major achievements recorded in the last two years:

Health Sector
  1. Government restructure the Drug Revolving Fund Scheme (DRFS) and made it more effective through the provision of adequate funds to produce drugs for distribution at subsidize rate in all the 33 General Hospitals in the State.
  2. Ensure the provision of basic facilities and hospital equipment as well as the general renovation of the state specialists hospital.
  3. Recruitment of qualified medical doctors and other health professionals.
  4. Embarking on the completion and rehabilitation of the six (6) out of ten (10) abandoned comprehensive health centers across the state.
  5. Emarked on the construction of a neew befitting 150 bed capacity General Hospital in Maiduguri at the total cost of N300m. Similarly, a new Gerneral Hospital is being constructed at Askira in Askira Uba Local Government Area.
  6. At the preventive health sub-sector, Government has been setting aside substantial amount to produce enough CSM, yellow fever and measles vaccines to protect the vulnerable population against contacting the disease.
  7. To enhance the activities of HIV/AIDs program in the state government has released its counterpart fund to the State Action Committee on Aids.
